50th Anniversary Dinner - Thursday 3rd October 2013

Our dinner this year to celebrate our 50th Anniversary was a resounding success with a record 83 in attendance.

Our main speaker Jim McArthur was in excellent form and our guest Sir William Macpherson introduced the evening with a few  of his classic jokes.

The food as usual was of a very high standard and the feedback from everyone has been very positive and  an enjoyble evening was had by all.

I have received many letters of thanks and I have attached one from Bill Macpherson for your interest.

Result - Match 26 - Home - New Club St Andrews - on Thursday 12th September

Holding a marginal lead from the away match, it was imperative to have a win here and we certainly did it in style with a resounding victory over our old rivals to win the Bali Dodo trophy for only the 2nd time in 14 years.
My thanks to Graeme Hunter for all his work and  doing a magnificent job as Captain for the day.

Result - Match 25 - Away - Ladybank - on Tuesday 10th September

Despite fielding a fairly strong team,  we failed yet again  to prevail against a very competitive Ladybank side.
However two of the matches were so close that the result could have gone the other way.
My thanks to Stewart Ferguson for all his work as acting Captain for the day.

Despite early wet conditions the team did extremely well to retain the Highland Quaich with the narrowest of victories - 4 1/2  to 3 1/2. Congratulations to Chris Athanas for his excellent organisation as Captain  in a match which was fraught with late call-offs and doubtful weather. However all was well on the day and  everyone had a most enjoyable and successful day.

Match 17 - Vs Gullane GC on Thursday 18th July

Result - Match 16 - Away - Edzell GC - on Thursday 11th July

Although this was yet another defeat, the result does not properly reflect our performance, as many of the games went to the wire and could well have gone the other way. Many thanks to Chris Athanas for his excellent work as  Captain for the day.

Results - Matches 11 - 15

The matches played since I have been on holiday have all been very difficult with mixed results.

Match 11 -  Home  against Elie was a very close match with Blairgowrie finishing on top.

Match 12 -  Away against Royal Burgess was a disaster  - and  apart from the first pairing who won, all other matches were lost. However the hospitality and weather were first class and a most enjoyable day was had by all.

Match 13 - Home against Royal Aberdeen  - always a difficult game particularly this year as a strong side was sent down and the team did very well to achieve a creditable draw. Captain Wesencraft and his partner Hamish Hodge pulled out all the stops to draw their match after being 3 down with 4 to play.

Match 14 - Away against Dalhousie - This was an excellent win at Carnoustie and with a draw at home in the first leg, we finished overall winners.

Match 15 - Away against Ferntwowers  ( Crieff GC)  - once again we lost badly and since this fixture started in 2004 we have never won an away match there.

Thanks to all Captains of the day for their sterling  efforts

Match 16 - Vs Edzell GC - Away on Thursday 11th July

Wednesday, 5 June 2013

Result - Match 10 - Away - Gullane GC on Tuesday 4th June

In perfect conditions and the warmest day of the year so far, the team were narrowly beaten 5 - 3 in a very close fought match. We were extremely well looked after and the hospitality was as usual first class.

Thanks to Ian Beattie for doing so well as Captain of the day and despite this pressure,  won his game handsomely with his partner John Brodie.

Result - Match 09 - Glasgow GC on Thursday 30th May

Played in excellent conditions we played against Glasgow Golf Club for the very first time. In a very close fought match which could have gone either way,  we went down 3 matches to 5.
Our opponents were very complimentary regarding our course, clubhouse and first class catering provided on the day.

Many thanks to Lee Bushby for taking over the Captaincy for the day and for doing an excellent job.

Match 09- Vs Glasgow GC - On Thursday 30th May

Result - Match 08 Vs New Club St Andrews - Friday 24th May

Although it was fairly  windy, conditions otherwise were good  and the team did extremely well to gain the upper hand to  achieve a very rare away win and a  5 - 3 advantage over the first leg of the match for the Bali Dodo Trophy.

Thanks to Lee Bushby for his sterling work as Captain for the day.

Result - Match 07 - Vs Panmure GC - Thursday 23rd May

Despite extremely bitterly cold  and windy conditions the team ably led by captain Robin Mitchell achieved a magnificent  5 - 3 win at Panmure. Congratulations to all concerned as it is a very difficult venue to get such a good result.

Thanks again Robin for acting as Captain of the day and also to David Dawson for standing in as reserve so late in the day.

Thursday, 23 May 2013

Result - Match 06 - Vs Ladybank on Tuesday 21st May

In a hard fought match we managed a halved match against the usual very competitive Ladybank seniors.

This was a good result for us as in previous years we have invariably been on the losing side.

Fingers crossed for the return match.

Many thanks to Captain of the day  - Fergus Young for his valiant efforts.

Friday, 10 May 2013

Result - Match 05 Vs Dalhousie on Thursday 9th May

This very close and tight match ended in   yet another draw  3 1/2 -  3 1/2.

Thiis will be a very difficult result to carry forward to Carnoustie for the return match  later in the year when it is played over the Championship course.

The catering was as usual of a very high standard, and thanks go to Mike Beale who was Captain for  the day.

Result - Match 04 - Vs Glenbervie on Tuesday 7th May

On a beautiful sunny day the two teams played for the Blairbervie Trophy.

The result was a halved match 4 - 4 and as the holders are Glenbervie, they retain the trophy for another year.

Both teams enjoyed a great day's golf  ending with an excellent meal in the dining room.

Thanks to David Rice for his first class work as Captain for the day.

Friday, 26 April 2013

Match 04 - vs Glenbervie GC Seniors on Tuesday 7th May

Result - Match 03 Vs Downfield Away.

In extremely windy conditions, the Seniors came a  cropper at waterlogged Downfield but narrowly avoided a whitewash.

The team only managed one halved match out of eight, however by all accounts it was an enjoyable game and my thanks to John Hope for acting as Captain for the day.

The feedback  received is that due to the poor winter, Downfield,  like many other courses has severe drainage problems at the moment which is making the course even heavier than usual.

Score - 1/2 to 7 1/2.

Friday, 12 April 2013

Result - Match 2 - Vs Edzell on 11th April

On a cold but dry day, the home match against Edzell resulted in a 5 -5 draw.

With many of the games going to the final hole it turned out to be a very close and enjoyable match.

Positive reports were received from both teams on the first class condition of the courses and our excellent catering.

Thanks once again to Captain of the day  - Bill Younger.

Result - Match 1 Vs Ladies

On a bitterly cold but sunny day both teams played some excellent golf considering the conditions, but despite many of the games going to to the final hole, the Seniors just  managed to prevail and win the Columbine Cup back again with a flattering  8 - 4 victory.

Many thanks to the Ladies, our Seniors' Team and also the catering staff for a  wonderful day out.

Pictured below is the non-playing Lady Captain Vike Brown presenting the trophy to the Seniors' Captain Ian McPherson
